Framework for biodiversity Reconciliation Action Plans

Work Package 7: Ecological Mitigation

Main Goals
• To evaluate and test deterrents as ecological mitigation strategy;
• To integrate ecological mitigation strategies into a framework for reconciliation action plans.

Description of work and methodologies
We will compile and evaluate information on existing ecological mitigation strategies and test new methods. Existing ecological mitigation strategies will be evaluated in terms of their ecological efficacy and cost-effectiveness.

For seals and cormorants, we will use our own published and unpublished material and that from national ecological mitigation programs. For otters, no national ecological mitigation programs exist as yet because of limited success of the few methods tested. Therefore, we will test the effectiveness of a new ecological mitigation strategy: providing refuge to fish by otter exclusion cages. Ponds for these experiments will be selected in the Central European study region according to the critical factors identified by WPs 2 & WP3.

We will place different types of cages for carp and trout protection in ponds. Their efficacy will be tested using our tame otters. We will compare the number of non-commercial and commercial fish and the time required by the otter to land fish between experimental and control ponds.
